Get excited for each day in December as you explore these hand-stitched Christmas baubles that are also an Advent calendar! Each little felt ornament is a pouch that can hold treats, trinkets, and ideas for simple activities for the countdown to Christmas. And each one has a happy little face to bring a bit of extra joy!
You can display the ornaments on your tree (like ornaments!) or hang them as a garland. You could even use them as a way to hold a small gift for a friend or tie it to the top of a package!
These are fun and easy to stitch, so you can get the whole family involved in making them. Everyone can choose some favorite colors or add some extra decorations. Then get ready for a month of fun!
Start the countdown now as you start making these fun Advent pouches!
For each ornament, cut out a front and two matching back pieces from colorful felt. Cut out one rectangle for the hanger. To make this Advent calendar, we chose five colors of felt for the baubles and cut five ornaments from each color.
Embroider a face on the front piece for each ornament. Thread a needle with six strands of floss black embroidery floss. Stitch the eyes with French knots and the mouth with a scallop stitch. You can mark the pattern with a pencil or just freehand it…it will always come out cute!
TIP: If you’d like to skip the embroidery, you can also paint these faces with acrylic paint and a toothpick, or leave it off altogether and decorate the baubles with other felt shapes.
Fold the rectangle piece in half and place it at the top of the ornament and then layer the two half pieces on top.You can do this either way, but we placed the top half first, then the bottom half. The edges should overlap a little.
Pinning or clipping these together as you move on to the next step is helpful. We used Wonder Clips for sewing.
Cut a piece of embroidery floss to match your felt and divide it to work with three strands. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the other end.Stitch around the bauble. Make sure you sew through the hanger piece as well.
Now repeat those steps to make all your felt ornament pouches!
With all your Christmas baubles finished, it’s time to fill them with fun surprises.
Small wrapped candies are always fun to find inside an Advent calendar, and both peppermints and chocolates work well here. You can also write out a few activities or perhaps some silly holiday jokes and slip them into the pouches. Small toys, charms, erasers or hair ties are also perfect filler!
Since these are ornaments, you can use string to make little tied hanging loops so you can display one or 25 on your tree.
You can also hang the bauble pouches on string as a garland! Leave them on the string as you remove the contents from an ornament each day in December. The garland will look cute, even as you empty the felt pouches.
